Not long after her husband's inaugurationHelen (Nellie) Taft met with the Public Building Commissoner for the District of Columbia and began planning to turn the swamp along the Potomac Tidal Basin into a beautiful park complete with bandstand. She then worked with various individuals to eventually have the cherry trees planted there as well. Thus she certainly created one of the longest lasting legacies of any First Lady.
