In 1814, The British burned the White House and other public buildings. Many, including President Madison, were strongly considering moving the capital to a more secure location. Dolley Madison was strongly in favor of rebuilding The White House and inspired a program to get volunteers to help in the rebuilding. How much influence she personally had in the decision to rebuild, it is hard to say, but Mrs. Madison was known to be quite persuavive !
