Mrs. Benjamin(Caroline) Harrison had big plans, and I do mean big plans for the White House. At that time, the President's offices were in the White House itself--there was no West Wing with its Oval Office as there is today. As government expanded, there became less and less living space for the families. Mrs. Harrison met with the Secretary of State, worked with an the architect, and devised a grand plan which included several new buildings including a wing for offical offices and another wing for historical art. She gained the public's support and the bill passed the Senate and seemed assured of passing the House. But the House never got to vote on it, as the Speaker never brought it to the floor for a vote. The reason - President Harrison had slighted him earlier in regards to a poltical appontment and this was his payback !
