Elizabeth Monroe decorated the mansion with much of her own furniture, in the French style she loved so much. Many felt it was "too French" and not American enough. Mrs. Monroe, because of her reserved personality was already having a difficult time being accepted after the flambouency of Dolley Madison, who actually fled the mansion when it was burnt, waiting to leave until the last moment and saving important articles and documents.
